Alvin's Story
In a workshop in Bali, we asked a group of young artists to draw their world. Alvin picked up a pencil and drew a dragon.
Not just any dragon. A dragon with a long neck built to reach for things. Wings designed to chase the highest dreams. Feathers falling, each one a sacrifice made along the way. And one prosthetic leg. Just like his.
The Drawing
Alvin is 16 years old. He has a prosthetic leg. When we asked him to draw his world, he didn't draw his limitation. He drew what he refused to stop doing.
He drew himself, sweating, feathers falling, wings stretched but never folded. One leg made of metal. Still standing. Still flying.
That drawing is on this hoodie. His lines, his proportions, his signature, preserved exactly as drawn. Nothing added. Nothing removed.
In His Own Words
"This is a simple animal that comes to mind. It has a long neck used to reach for things, and wings that serve to reach for the highest of dreams. The feathers falling from this animal symbolize the many sacrifices it has made. The animal has distinctive legs — one is normal, and the other is a prosthetic, which reflects my current condition. The sweat depicted on this animal shows just how exhausted it is from its struggle. But it will continue its journey."
— Alvin, 16
